The purpose of the proposed study program is to educate highly scientific and research staff in the modern and complex scientific field of sustainable development management. This program incorporates and connects different disciplines and areas of human knowledge to provide students with the broad perspective necessary in the management of sustainable development. The goal is for future PhDs, who can engage in scientific research, to be in top management positions in companies, or in other important positions in society, to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and competences, focusing simultaneously on several dimensions: business (business prosperity) , social, environmental and other dimensions related to the management of sustainable development.

This study program is a response to contemporary trends in Europe and the world, and is in line with the aspirations of the highest European and world organizations. Thus, the United Nations has high expectations from the economy and society when it comes to the complex matter of sustainable development. Business must stop all practices that harm society and the environment. What's more, business should proactively cooperate with various social actors and institutions in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development through sustainable business operations, projects and innovations. Sustainable development can also represent a great opportunity for business, because successful management of sustainable development strengthens the environment for business functioning and market development. For example, responsible companies influence the development of local communities in the territories where they operate or systematically fight natural disasters resulting from climate change.

In Serbia, unlike many countries of the European Union and the world, the material related to this area is taught in a traditional way, mostly without taking into account the complexity of sustainable development. In order to acquire the necessary knowledge and competences in accordance with modern European and world trends and to establish quality connections between the university, the economy and the wider social community, the purpose of these studies is the education of flexible and highly professional personnel capable of management and scientific and innovative research and implementation in the field of Sustainable Development Management.

Upon completion of doctoral studies, the necessary knowledge and skills are acquired for independent scientific and research work in the field of social sciences. The study program provides participants with a deeper theoretical knowledge of the determinants of sustainable development, connection with other scientific fields, critical thinking and extension, as well as the ability to define relevant research problems. Also, students are provided with the use of the most modern research methods, tools and procedures. Students develop the ability to analyze, synthesize and use an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, as well as the ability to work in research teams and an international environment.
